Kuumba / Creativity - Mkeka (Mat)

To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

Materials You Need:

  • Five sheets of heavy cardstock paper (brown, red, green, black, yellow)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Markers or coloring tools

How to Make Your Kuumba Mat:

  1. Prepare the Base: Fold the brown paper in half and cut five lines to create strips.
  2. Create Candles:
    • Cut one strip of black paper for the black candle.
    • Cut three strips of red paper and three strips of green paper for the candles.
  3. Add Flames: Cut the yellow paper into six small strips for the flames and glue them to the candles.
  4. Assemble the Mat: Slip each candle into the brown paper, starting with black, then red, then green.
  5. Finish Up: Continue until all paper candles are in place to complete your beautiful mat.
